September, 2016 – Golfers gathered at the Pitt Meadows Golf Club on Monday, September 19th to help the union raise funds for the MS Society of Canada (BC & Yukon Division) at the Local 258 IBEW 23rd Annual Golf Tournament. Brother Dan Klassen, Assistant Business Manager, and Brother Mark Davison, Unit 5 Executive member, welcomed golfers at the registration desk where they checked in and received their complimentary golf shoe bags, provided by Mohr Good Ideas and Leopard Print Communications, stuffed with a custom golf notebook provide by Printcraft in Burnaby, a branded golf pencil, first aid kit, a snack and course information. Each golfer also received a gift card for the Cactus Club restaurant chain.
The skies were threatening but the sun came through for the shotgun start at 1:00 pm. Volunteers from the Power Pioneers (retired BC Hydro employees and L258IBEW members) and their spouses helped get the game underway. Golfers enjoyed on-course treats with a candy station provided by the Inn at the Quay and every hole on the course was sponsored by supporters.
Many thanks to our major sponsors of this year’s tournament; BC Hydro, Koskie Glavin Gordon, Pacific Electrical installations, RS Line Construction, Cam Tran, Power Up Line Contractors, Eecol Electric and the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society.
Additional supporters and sponsors included:
Best Western Plus Coquitlam Conference Inn
Coast Victoria Harbourside Hotel
Electrical Contractors Association of BC
Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel, Burnaby
Hotel Grand Pacific, Victoria
IBEW Local 993
Valley Power Line Contracting
Local 258 IBEW was happy to see so many attend this year’s tournament including golf teams from Rokstad, Ascension Benefits, Asplundh and Mitchell Press. The afternoon game was cut short though after monsoon-type rains descended on the greens and when the thunder, lightning and reports of hail started, golfers quickly exited the course and headed to the Club House. A fantastic BBQ steak dinner with ‘all the fixins’ was enjoyed and some lucky golfers with winning raffle ticket got to choose from a wide selection of prizes provided by sponsors and supporters.
After dinner, guests heard from Taryn Lencoe from the MS Society of Canada who described how Multiple Sclerosis affects the body and spoke about the impact of this disease on those with this condition and their families. She thanked Local 258 IBEW for our long-standing support of the MS Society of Canada (BC & Yukon Division) that has raised over $83,000 to date and she also thanked all of today’s golfers for showing their support of the Society that works to help those afflicted with this disease.
May thanks go to everyone who helped organize the tournament, including golf committee members Brother Dan Klassen, Brother Mark Davison, Brother Rick Gerard, Brother Walter Goodwin, Brother Anthony Reid, Brother Jim McKay and Sister Michelle Boudreau.
Funds raised at the 23rd Annual Golf Tournament will be announced when tabulated.
