
About Local 258 The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 258 represents almost 4,000 members working throughout the province of British Columbia. The union represents members who work in the Electric Utility, Private Power Line, Utility Arborist, Manufacturing and Traffic Control Industries. Established through the granting of an International Charter in 1967, Local 258 is structured according to geographic location: The Bylaws and Constitution of Local 258 outlines a geographic "Unit" structure with Local 258 members elected to positions in each Unit Executive. The Unit Executive is responsible for conducting the official business of the union and for developing policies that are forwarded to Local 258's Executive Board for determination. The Unit Executive is subordinate to the Local 258 Executive Board, and all positions are elected by the membership every three years. The Local 258 Executive Board consists of the Local Union President and six Executive Board members and is responsible for formulating Local 258 policies and overseeing the business of the union. The Business Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Business Office, administration of Executive Board policy and administration of the Collective Agreements. The Business Manager appoints such Assistant Business Managers and Shop Stewards as he deems necessary to assist him in the efficient handling of the Local Union's business. The Business Manager has a voice but no vote at the Executive Board meetings. Local 258 communicates to its’ membership through publication of their newsletter, the HOTLINE and maintenance of their website, www.ibew258.bc.ca. IBEW Local 258 is affiliated to the BC Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress and has representation at many community Labour Councils throughout British Columbia. | |
