Members of Local 258 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers gathered to help out the family of Brother Darin Knutson, a member working at BC Hydro in Surrey, who remains in hospital after suffering a life threatening head injury after being involved in a motorcycle accident in early May of this year. Brother Knutson’s wife, Cindy, told The Hotline during a recent interview, “Darin was traveling home on his motorcycle after spending an afternoon helping get a motor home we were going to borrow from a friend this summer ready for a family holiday when he was involved in a really bad motorcycle accident.” Since then, Cindy, daughter Alicia and son James have had to immerse themselves in the world of medical technology as Darin remained in a coma for almost two months. He is now beginning to show signs of recovery and was recently transferred to Surrey Memorial from the Royal Columbian. Darin’s progress is “slow but sure”, reports Cindy. In the meantime, Cindy and her kids were left with having to manage their large property in South Surrey and quickly came to realize all the work that Darin used to effortlessly do around the yard was now not getting done. “Before I knew it the grass was so high and the weeds were out of control, the outdoor swimming pool needed to be fixed for the kids and I didn’t know how I was going to get that all done,” said Cindy. Hearing Cindy’s plight, Darin’s IBEW brothers stepped into action. They organized a work weekend at Cindy & Darin’s place and came together to do the much needed yard work and help get the pool ready for the kids as summer approached. “I am so grateful what these guys came and did for us,” said Cindy. “They have been so helpful and have gone over and above. They were chopping wood and fixing things. We so appreciate their caring and concern and help and don’t know what we would have done without them.” |
