Seeking members to help build our first Local 258 IBEW NextGen Committee!
July, 2020 - Local 258 IBEW is reaching out to members 35 years of age and younger who want to make an impact in our Union, in the organized labour movement and in your community and help build our first NextGen Committee!
We are creating this space for younger members to get involved in our Union's future and to ensure your needs and interests are properly understood and represented. With a mandate to increase Union activism through education, engagement and leadership opportunities, your Union can help guide and equip young workers like you with the tools you will need to be our leaders of tomorrow.
Local 258 IBEW is part of a North-America-wide movement of close to 750,000 members working in many diverse workplaces, with a long and proud history. For more than 100 years, we have been at the forefront in the campaign for decent pay, benefits and working conditions.
Local 258 is still growing and improving, building on strategies for organizational development and organizing. We negotiate first-class benefits for our members and offer opportunities and support to our members to become more active in your communities and within our Local Union.

Fostering Diversity
It’s important that our NextGen Committee is inclusive and represents our Local Union in terms of diversity of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and job classification. Having a diverse committee will help us gain knowledge from different trade classifications and various places of employment. If you work in the public Electric Utility, Private Power Line, Traffic Control, Manufacturing or Utility Arborist industries, you are an important member of our Local, and your participation in Union activities that promote equality for all workers will help make our Next Gen Committee a valuable resource to further unify and strengthen our Local 258 IBEW membership.
Supported by the IBEW
NextGen is an initiative created by the IBEW First District Canada to better understand and engage our younger members in IBEW Locals across Canada. Designed to ensure the IBEW continues to remain relevant and reflecting the best interest of all generations of its’ members, NextGen is focused on responding to the needs of IBEW members under the age of 35.
Our International Union fully supports the advancement of emerging young worker Committees like NextGen in Canada and, in American IBEW Locals in the USA, the Reach Out and Engage Next-Gen Electrical Workers, known as RENEW Committees, and has established an Advisory Committee comprised of young IBEW leaders from each District and the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus. The Committee meets periodically to strategize ways to increase Union participation and activism, and to facilitate communication and cooperation between these young worker groups and the International office.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Reach Out and Engage Next-Gen Electrical Workers (RENEW) initiative is to inspire the next generation of IBEW workers to become active in their Local Unions by focusing on issues important to young workers, providing education about the IBEW and the labour movement, and fostering relationships between members and Local Union leadership.
On the horizon
Based on the success of last year’s RENEW/NextGen Conference in St Louis, hosted by the IBEW, this year’s meeting will be a virtual event, taking place on August 15 & 16, 2020. If you are interested in learning more and participating in this valuable education, please email Dayna Gill, Local 258 IBEW Assistant Business Manager at Local 258 IBEW. Your Union encourages as many younger members as possible to participate.
