UPDATED OCTOBER 12 @ 9:00 am
We have heard from many of our members who have expressed their opinions on BC Hydro’s vaccine mandate. Some opposing the mandate, some in favour and some who have been vaccinated but want to support their brothers and sisters right to choose. We are working with our legal council and the greater labour movement to address the concerns of the membership.
We are waiting for BC Hydro to provide updated information on consequences for those who choose not to get vaccinated and what a valid medical exemption will be. In the meantime, we have collective agreements in place with all of our employers and we are required to uphold our commitment to those agreements and the public. Please continue to work safely and to focus on the tasks at hand.
Please continue to monitor this website for updated information.
UPDATED @ 11:45 AM
October 8, 2021 - BC Hydro has officially informed Local 258 IBEW by way of email they have instituted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy affecting all employees and contractors.
Doug McKay, Business Manager/Financial Secretary, is reviewing the details of this new mandated policy and continues to consult with representatives of the BC Federation of Labour, other provincial public sector Unions, and IBEW First District (Canada) International Vice President Tom Reid to convene a meeting of IBEW Business Managers from across Canada.
McKay is also seeking a legal opinion on the new policy regarding compliance and potential consequences.
Please stay tuned as we will be releasing further information as it is available.
Local 258 IBEW continues to enforce options that respect members’ rights and the current applicable laws in their workplaces.
