UPDATE #5: Posted March 21st, 2022 @ 11:00 am

UPDATE #4: Posted December 21st @ 2:00 pm

Sr. ABMs Jim Greenwell and Joey Sutherland report that arbitration hearing dates will be scheduled for completion by early next March for the Union’s policy grievance with BC Hydro regarding the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Preliminary discussions between Legal Counsel from both the Union and the employer with assigned  Arbitrator Gabe Somjen have resulted in the Union securing a commitment from the employer that no employee currently on leave without pay as a result of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate policy will be terminated prior to a decision being made by the Arbitrator on the merits of the case, likely sometime in April, 2022.

UPDATE #2: Posted Nov. 22nd @ 4:00 PM

This morning we met with our legal counsel to address BC Hydro denying our Stage 2 grievance. Our legal counsel is preparing the necessary paperwork to file a Section 104 with the Labour Relations Board to expedite the traditional timeline of an arbitration. As more information becomes available it will be posted on this website.

UPDATE #1: Posted Nov. 19th @ 7:15 pm

In a brief conference call late this afternoon, I spoke with members of BC Hydro’s executive team – Chris O’Riley, President & CEO; Charlotte Mitha, Executive Vice President, Operations; and Carolyn Ryan, Vice President, People & Chief Human Resources Officer –  who confirmed our grievance has been denied at Step 2. No additional information was shared with us.

Your Union will be seeking expedited arbitration next week in response and will continue to keep you updated.

Posted November 19, 2021, @4:30 pm

In response to the Stage 2 grievance meeting held yesterday and the Union’s request for an expedited answer given that Monday is the last day for employees to declare their vaccination status, BC Hydro has replied that it has no plans to alter the implementation dates for it COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.

BC Hydro’s Employee Relations Manager wrote:

“I am writing to follow up on the Stage 2 grievance meeting held yesterday. You asked that we provide you with our reply as soon as possible given that Monday is the last day for employees to declare their vaccination status before being placed on unpaid leave. We will not be able to provide you with a comprehensive reply today but will commit to getting that to you next week.

“In the meantime we feel it is only fair to let you know that at this time we have no plans to alter the implementation dates of our COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.

“I appreciate that you remain concerned about the implementation of the policy next week. We remain committed to work with you on any issues that arise next week and beyond.”

Your Union is reviewing its next steps, which will likely include a referral to arbitration.
