Voting Safely
Oct 02, 2020

UPDATED OCTOBER 21

Posted October 2, 2020

THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24th IS ELECTION DAY.

Voter registration for the provincial election is now closed online and by phone, but you can still register or update your information when you vote in person.

To register to vote in British Columbia, you must be:

  • 18 or older by General Voting Day,
  • a Canadian citizen, and
  • a B.C. resident for the past six months as of General Voting Day.

Elections BC has been working with the Office of the Provincial Health Officer and WorkSafe BC to ensure voting will be conducted safely for voters, candidates and election workers.

If you are ill or self-isolating, do not visit any voting place. Call Elections BC at 1-800-661-8683 for assistance.

All voting places and district electoral offices will have protective measures in place, including:

  • Physical distancing
  • Capacity limits
  • Election officials wearing personal protective equipment (such as masks and face-visors)
  • Protective barriers
  • Hand sanitizing stations
  • Frequent cleaning of voting stations and frequently touched surfaces
  • Election workers trained on safe workplace guidelines and pandemic protocols

Elections BC has established Voting Place practices with their voting place safety plan (PDF) that includes input provided by WorkSafeBC that voting places will follow.

Please follow the instructions from election officials and signage in the voting place, keeping in mind that some familiar voting procedures may be different. For example, you will show your identification without handing it to an election official, and you will make a verbal declaration of your eligibility to vote instead of signing a voting book.

You may wear a face mask if you wish.

Vote in person on General Voting Day:

You can vote in person on General Voting Day on Saturday, October 24, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. You will need to bring Valid ID showing your name and home address – see Valid ID requirements here; and your Where to Vote card – this will arrive in the mail from Elections BC before October 15, 2020. For convenience, you can vote at any voting place, but it is usually faster to vote at your assigned voting place as indicated on your Where to Vote card. If you want, you can bring your own pen or pencil to mark your ballot, and you are encouraged to wear a mask to protect others.

Find out more about Where to Vote or check the Where to Vote app for regular updates.

PLEASE NOTE: COMPLETED VOTE-BY-MAIL PACKAGES MUST BE RECEIVED BY ELECTIONS BC BEFORE 8:00 PM (PACIFIC TIME) ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24.

Accessible voting for at-risk voters and voters with disabilities:

Besides mail-in ballots, voters who are at-risk or who have disabilities have many additional options to register their vote, including curbside voting, assisted telephone voting, and site-based voting.

Visit this Elections BC website page to find out details and further information.
