Message from Doug McKay, L258 IBEW BM/FS, regarding the election
Oct 10, 2020

October 10, 2020 - “Good governance is mandatory; politics, unfortunately, is an obligatory distraction.”

A provincial election has been called, and we currently find ourselves with an opportunity, and responsibility, to give a clear mandate and choose our direction for the next four years.

Given the recent history of good government, including the successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic here in British Columbia, your Union strongly supports a continuation of the stable, fair and focused leadership provided by John Horgan and the BC NDP.

After 16 years of gross mismanagement by the BC Liberals, we cannot afford to go back to the era of neglect of the significant number of issues that are vitally important to our members, our families and our communities.

When I look back on those difficult years that lacked genuine and respected involvement with decisions affecting our membership at the government table, it has been a refreshing turn of the tide to have open and meaningful discussion that has put working people first.

The door has always been open for us with the BC NDP and we have been welcomed in bringing our issues and ideas forward to engage in meaningful conversations with effective results. They respectfully listen to, reach out and engage with us on every level.

There are many important items remaining on our agenda and we cannot afford to have the door slammed in our faces again by a BC Liberal government that clearly displayed a singular view approach that did not, and does not, include us.

Don’t be distracted by the shiny baubles being thrown out there by Andrew Wilkinson and the BC Liberals in this election campaign as there is always a higher price to pay for working people like us. Everything is at stake, including BC Hydro. Don’t forget it was Andrew Wilkinson who was Deputy Premier when Gordon Campbell tried to dismantle the crown corp and put it on the path to outrageous, overpriced agreements with private power companies that continue to compromise the bottom line to this day!

The agreement with the BC Green Party has effectively come to an end as they have clearly shown they do not fully support the issues important to the growth of our labour movement.

Much work remains to be done and I encourage you to strongly consider your choice in this election. Our working futures depend on good governance and John Horgan and the BC NDP have proven themselves to be a capable and steady hand to guide us through some pretty rough waters, and we’re not there yet. They deserve a clear mandate.

Thank you for your attention and, in the words of Dr. Bonnie Henry, be kind, be calm and be safe.
