Business Manager Releases Strike Survival Manual
Updated On: Jan 20, 2026

For Immediate Release - Langley, BC

Business Manager and Financial Secretary Cody Gatzke has released a new Strike Survival Manual designed to help members understand and navigate labour disputes. The manual, initially developed by IBEW Local 636, is now available to members on the union website.

The Strike Survival Manual is a comprehensive guide intended to educate and support members if collective bargaining reaches an impasse. It explains the fundamentals of job action and provides clear, practical information to help members prepare for and participate in a strike or lockout should one occur.

The manual covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • An overview of labour disputes and different forms of job action
  • What members can expect before, during, and after a strike or lockout
  • Expectations for conduct on picket lines and during job action
  • Information on strike pay and available union support
  • Practical tools such as sample letters to creditors and guidance on managing personal finances during a work stoppage

According to Gatzke, the purpose of the manual is to remove uncertainty and ensure members are not left searching for information at a stressful time.

“Labour disputes can be challenging and unfamiliar for many members,” said Gatzke. “This manual is about education and preparedness. It gives members clear information, practical tools, and confidence so they know what to expect and where to turn for support.”

The manual reinforces that strike action is always a last resort and that no job action occurs without a democratic mandate from the membership. It also emphasizes responsible conduct, public safety, and the importance of maintaining the union’s credibility during any labour dispute.

Preparedness Through Education

Gatzke stressed that the Strike Survival Manual is not about encouraging job action, but about ensuring members are informed and prepared if negotiations break down.

“Being prepared means being informed,” Gatzke said. “This manual helps our members understand their rights, their responsibilities, and the support their union provides during a labour dispute.”

The Strike Survival Manual is available now on the union website to members with an active account and will be referenced at Unit meetings as part of ongoing member education.
